Zone identity if Possible

Matt,
Is it possible, with the input of the member, to place the zone of the person on his posts. I think it would be helpful to know from where the info is coming. Is this a good idea? More importantly is it possible without creating all kinds of problems?

Well just a thought, anyone else agree?

Re: Zone identity if Possible

Hello Jay,
Do you mean something like this...
USDA plant hardiness zones

5: -20° to -10°F -29.0° to -23.5°C
6: -10° to 0°F -23.5° to -18.0°C
7: 0° to 10°F -17.5° to -12.5°C
8: 10° to 20°F -12.0° to -6.5°C
9: 20° to 30°F -6.5° to -1.0°C
10: 30° to 40°F -1.0° to 4.5°C

Found on this website: http://www.b-and-t-world-seeds.com/European.htm

Regards,
Eric

Another great site is this one...
http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html
If you click on the map in this site you'll get a close-up of the area.

Re: Zone identity if Possible

Eric... thank you . I did mean the USDA hardiness zones. I just think it is helpful to know where the person lives (by zone). To answer a question it helps!!! , more importantly to listen to advise it is good to know from where it comes! I'm in zone 5/6. If some one tells me a specific tree is hardy to winter outdoors and they are from zone 8...well you get it

Re: Zone identity if Possible

Hi Jay,

This is a great suggestion. I will look into adding some type of USDA zone. I think the only problem is in making it user friendly enough so folks can figure out what zone they're in. I think it will need to be an option because many new forum members aren't aware of USDA zone system.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Zone identity if Possible

Isn't there a program like the weather thing that would allow you to put in a zip code, and give you the zone? That would be cool indeed, (pun intended).

Re: Zone identity if Possible

Its me again........You are correct you can just enter your zone somewhere in the profile.. I have added it to my "signature". The thing is not many have. I just thought it to be a quick way to understand where the advise was coming from. Yes I am a northeasterner and a good deal of the people on this site are from the West or South. When info is exchanged its nice to know from where it comes.

USDA Zone info is now incorporated.

Zone info now shows in posts, assuming it has been entered. There is also a link next to it that explains the zoning system.

This is still a voluntary process, but if you see a blank next to your post, you'll know you should visit your control panel and edit your profile!

Regards,

Matt
