Lightbulb User CP

it has become quite obvious that the "powers that be" around here are pretty particular about having new users complete thier user cp. i must agree, it does make it easier to help people when we know where they are, i just think that there's gotta be an easier way than having to post in a bunch of threads and ask for this to be done.
SUGGESTION:
a mass email to all existing members, including all information that they would need to understand what the User CP function does. then, with each new signup, the same email automatically explaining how this info helps and, again, what it does.

call me crazy, but i think that might just work a little better than the "case by case" method employed right now. hope this helps.

We're already working on it, Chris, as we can. It will cover a lot of the issues that we have to repeat constantly.

Unfortunately, though, human nature often skips all the written words and just doesn't read them. Note, the stickys at the top of many of the subforums. There's on on top of the Dying Bonsai forum area with good diagnostic questions. Do people read it? Nooooooooo.

And this one in Bonsai FAQ is very good too. And how many of you have read this one, on top of the General Forum?

Yes, it will be better to bundle all of this information and maybe sending it when a new user signs up.....

A few more topics that might be useful....

"So, your first Bonsai is a Juniper with rocks glued on?"

"All the leaves fell off and the soil is dry as the Sahara, will it live?"

"What's a nebari, and why should I care?"

"I repotted it in December, trunk chopped in January, pinched shoots in February, am I going too slow?"

"Five ounces of water every twenty-seven hours, is that a good schedule?"

ChrisM:

Agreed, and hear, hear.

It should be noted, often forum members will step in and say the same thing before the powers step in to do it --- for which we are grateful, of course.

As my fellow modette points out, all the info is available-- but sometimes people are FAQ-impaired, Google-impaired, or just not used to the online experience.

Although, being called both a Power That Be, and a Modette, is pretty nice.

Thank you for the suggestion, Chris.

Or maybe just lazy I wonder why your basic profile, i.e. zone, state and or country could not be made a part of the membership enrollment? I'm sure Paul would appreciate it "if it is possible". BTW, Paul you've been doing a great service monitoring this. Congratulations and thanks! Joanie I kinda like Chris' title Modette, it sounds nice.

Some of the problem may be that people tend to register and then browse for a while, and by the time they decide to post they've forgotten what they read. (Not just the User CP part) Some people may not want to give the information, or even look it up, if they intend to just browse. Just a thought.

if they intend to just browse, they would not even need to sign up as i remember (that's how i started here), they just can't post. as far as not wanting to give the information, if it were a part of the signup process and explained correctly (as well as hyperlinks to find out heat zone, etc.) i am not sure why anyone - seasoned veteran or brand newbie - wouldn't provide the necessary info that would help them in thier (new found) hobby by obtaining access to the information that comes with being a member. combining my original thought with sauces thoughts kinda makes a lot of sense, does it not? it would require a little work to get it started but i think it would be worth it in the long run. if needed, i would be willing to help create the web page for it (using frontpage 2000) just give me the required questions and links, i could whip it out in, likely, less than an hour.

i don't want to sound like i am picking on you joanie (cuz i am not), but in your profile, aka user cp, you don't list how long you have been doing bonsai. being ex-military, i am from the "lead by example" school. again, i don't mean to sound like i am picking on anybody, or joanie herself, but if a newbie uses this site for all it has to offer, including being able to see how expierienced someone giving them information is, ........... well, to some people that matters.
