Regarding the "Tree of the Day"

Three cheers for Treebay and the "Tree of the Day!"

"Tree of the day" is quickly becoming a favorite feature for me. I don't always post a reply, but I always look, and read the comments. (Now, can we get Walter to chime in?)

I just wanted to share my feelings on that. Others are invited to chime in about how cool this site is.

What a great learning tool...Of all the wonderful features Mr. Matt has come up with for this forum, I consider this by far the best...I too have not made comments on the trees posted so far, however I have not missed reading the suggestions on each tree posted...I look forward to each day seeing the new challange and learning how others ascess the positives and negatives of the tree...

Regards
Behr

One more vote here!!

I may not post to the threads but I DO enjoy and feel that I have learned something from them.

I can also see from some of the posts that the on line course has helped some of our members with their 'Bonsai eye'...

Me too!!! I absolutely LOVE this new feature. I learn something on it every day. It's making me pay attention, too, to my own growth. I don't comment on all of them. Sometimes, I really don't feel that I have anything to add, so I save it for maybe the next tree.

It's fun to comment on them before reading what others say, so that you can see if you're on the same wavelength as others, or if you're way out there...

Great addition.

I just want to reiterate how cool this feature is. Even though i don't post every day, I read it faithfully.

Some of the discussin has gotten almost heated. And I say, GOOD! This is creativity happening.

When people see style issues differently, it means art is happening, even if we aren't all a bunch of Picassos and Rodins running around here. And I like the fact that everyone from muckers to masters can take a stab. IMHO, virtual compositions are also the best place to learn from mistakes. Better to "castrate" a digital image than a real tree!

It is absolutely the best thing going. I always, always look several times a day as people post their comments. My initial impression is usually "wow, great tree!" (newbie envy) but soon I am absorbed in the discussion of how to make it even better.

And please, everyone who is in a position to chime in, keep doing so. The more voices, opinions, and virtuals there are, the better we all learn.

Matt, you rock!

I thought I would bump this up again in light of recent criticism of the TOD feature by Bonsaial1.

Link 1

Link 2

I have given my response, but I'll quote it again here:
Quote:
Al, I have submitted TWO trees to the tree of the day section, and benefitted enormously from the process.

All the comments on both trees were helpful and relevant. The first tree has benefitted from the process, some subtle changes have been made based on suggestions that I think greatly improve it. The second tree has not been worked on yet, but it will be, and I will be applying some of the recommendations given in the TOD thread.

So you see, the feature has been of demonstrable use and benefit, because I have applied the suggestions and learned in the process.

Unfortunately I don't think there have been many submissions to Matt, he is left to pick trees from his photo archive for us to talk about. But even that has benefits, just going through the process of evaluation time and again is beneficial. Taking the time to think through what you like and dislike about the posted tree is beneficial, even if it may never be worked on as a result of comments.
So, are we all wasting our time and deluding ourselves, or has Al cut to the root of the matter and saved us all from wasting any more of our time?

Regards,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

Well I can see Al's point, and he is quite right that nothing is as good as actually working on "real" trees.

Where TOTD really scores is that various options can be tried all without damage to the tree. This is certainly not the option in real life - Once its cut there is NO GOING BACK !

The biggest benefit to me, is in opening my eyes with regard to looking at trees more objectively. Take my recent discussion with Walter on that "Bar Branch" issue. Link
Also, that wide elm I have, up till last year, I would have just cut it back to a normal "broom" style and it would look like ALL the other brooms in my collection. It is now unique and a tree of "special interest". See the Thread here

This has all come about by firstly learning ALL the accepted rules and now finding out that they CAN be bent/ignored/etc... to great effect.

I would say this site and TOTD has given me that insight more than any book or instructor, who more often than not - work by the rules and accepted Japanese styles when teaching. Why has Kevin Willson become so popular ? Can you not see "his style" in the work he does. See his Website

So in summation - yes, TOTD has been beneficial to me along the road of learning. Please remember though, 2D pictures are not the same as a 3D Tree, but I can look at mine now with a more critical eye and wonder how I can apply my increased knowledge.

By the way. I know that Matt has been so busy with the Server change and Voting for the Styling and Article contests, that he has had to suspend the feature for now. It will return soon.

Best Regards,
Ian.

Just one other observation.

Looking back over the above posts, just look how many of the regulars on TOTD are ones who have been VERY SUPPORTIVE of Walter and the ATM forum.

Guess they can all see the benefit of this type of learning tool, and are eagerly awaiting its return.

Ian.
