Poll: Bolder and Bigger text

I have noticed a trend that seems to be growing here on the forum lately and I thought I'd see if others felt the same way I do about it.

People seem to be using more bold fonts and bigger font sizes than before. I have always felt that using only larger than normal text size or bold letters is "loud" and like virtually raising ones voice.

Although this is acceptable to highlight a word, title, or small section, many seem to feel the need to super-size and bold every word in every post they make. I do not know the reasoning behind this, if it is to make their words stand out more from the rest, if it is to draw attention to that particular post, or if they feel that it is somehow easier to read.

I personally find a thread much easier to read when all the fonts, text size, and normal unbolded text is used or used to simply highlight a word or portion of a statement. I may well be alone in feeling this, which is why I posted this poll...

...or maybe they just have bad eyes and need to read as they write? Those darn handicap people..I swear Grrrrrrrr

I can think of like 5-6 regular posters who have mentioned having "bad eyes" a couple times.I know of 3 that sometimes in chat will kindly ask if we use bold type or certain colors.I don't mind doing this at all, they have a special need. You are right about it being annoying sometimes..but I think if the writer is say from a different country or has an eye problem they should be cut a break.I see all caps alot at an international bonsai forum where english is sometimes a members #2 laungage, bothersome but I just let it slide.

Lightbulb Be bold

Like this? Good for the visually impaired i would say. I really do not think people would harbour that much angst or try to draw attention to themselves because of bold type. I fear we may be reading too much into this kind of thread which offers no way forward in the world of bonsai.I myself enjoy to see others benefit from the huge pool of knowledge that can be gained on this site about bonsai. Please let us adhere to relevancies and not the periphery. Regards Ash

I also prefer the regular text except for small sentences or something that the writer wishes to emphasize. It flows more easily.

We use text to give nuance, for instance, stressing the word can be easily accomplished in italics. Forceful, stern or important words CAN be bolded. Larger text is like raising your voice. Color seems to have less meaning... or does someone else have insight into that, too?

Agreed, Ash, it's just one of those things that people have opinions about. Certainly the visually impaired can be helped by bold type... but why should their own text be bolded then? Unless they wish to read it over before submitting? I remember some sort of program or something that makes type bigger on the screen.... what was it? You could scroll around and everything would be magnified. That would seem to be more useful if someone has vision problems.... it would mostly be someone else's posts they would want to read. Surely someone knows the name or how it works....

I really don't have a problem with it so long as it stays within acceptable bounds. It could be worse.

Matt

I think you have answered your own question well Joanie. The visually impaired may also use a magnified screen to read others posts. This thread may well have opened a can of worms where it should not have ventured. Opinions are important, indeed stimulating but should be very carefully thought out lest they offend certain sections of the community. Let us endeavour to be more diligent in our deliberations for the future. Regards Ash

Wait a second...

If we have visually impaired members then they would not benefit much from super-sizing their own posts as all the others would still be normal. Besides there are much easier ways to make all text bigger for themselves without bolding and super-sizing the whole forum. My father is visually impaired, he uses a lower resolution on his monitor and a very thick pair of glasses, he also uses a program that will read his email to him. He will go out of his way not to advertise this and hates to impose on anyone.

We are not talking about the visually impaired here, we are talking about people who type in bold letters all the time and who use larger than average text.

I don't mind being disagreed with, but let's not make up reasons or excuses for it. I would be more than happy to hear from a visually impaired person who would like to explain how super-sizing only there own posts helps.
