Bandwidth Limit Problems For May

In a good news, bad news situation, bonsaiTALK is again approaching our bandwidth limit early this month.

Q: How can I help?
Forum donations will enable us to increase the available bandwidth. Donations may be made by paypal or personal check. You can find more about donating to bonsaiTALK here:Donating to bonsaiTALK

Q: What's "Bandwidth?"
Bandwidth is a "budget" that enables us to transmit a certain amount of information each month, like minutes on your cell phone. Bandwidth doesn't really have to do with the number of messages and photographs on line, so deleting messages or photos won't help. Instead, "bandwidth" relates to how frequently they are accessed. Images use up by far the most space.

Q: Ok, how much have we got?
Currently, we have 28,947.57 Megabytes used, and we are supposed to have 30 gigabytes available - that's somewhere around 30,000 Megabytes.

I don't know if that's based on multiples of 1024 or 1000, but the point is we are dangerously close to the limit for the month of may, and we still have a week to go!

Q: What are we doing about the problem?
1) I have taken the immediate step of turning off image access to unregistered forum visitors. In retrospect, I probably should have done this sooner, but better late than never.

2) Images which were previously shown in-line right in the forum are now displayed as hotlinks, even for registered members. That means you have to click on 'em. Sorry about this! When the new month (June) rolls around we can return to our normal image display.

3) Last month we turned off Gallery access to unregistered members.

If we run out of Bandwidth, you'll see a temporary error message, something allong the lines of

ERROR

This account has exceeded its monthly maximum bandwidth allocation.

And you'll know why. In the event that does happen, we'll be back up on the June first, unless I finagle something in the meantime.

Regards,

Matt

Matt,
Maybe this would be a good time to remind the readers of THIS THREAD

Matt,

My check will be in the mail tomorrow. I will also try to get in the habit of contributing every month.

Thanks!

Update: Usage server is currently at

28,947.57 - Last Night
29,173.54 - This AM

the limit:

30,000.00

We can expect that the forum will run another 1-3 days before hitting the bandwidth limit. Then, conceivably we'd be down until June 1, 2004.

In the meantime, I have turned off the Gallery temporarily for everyone. If you click an image, a custom error page comes up.

Regards,

Matt

Matt,
This may seem more drastic, but would it be possible to turn off all images until the first of the month? I would rather have a text forum for a week then none at all.

Thanks Adam,

I understand. I am trying to do a "controlled" descent, but that is the way it's headed.

Matt

Damn...I'll miss you guys for a few days that it's down.

So here's my proposal: let's pick another forum - I'd suggest Gardenweb bonsai - and go there and continue for three days.

Label each new BonsaiTALK thread with a "BT" header.

E.g. "BT: Artistic principles of design"

What do you all think?

Matt,
Does the new IBC feature have much to do with reaching the limit so early? In other words, when BT members view/post to IBC from here, is it using up significant amount of bandwidth?

Just trying to figure out why the demand has risen in the last couple of months.

Because REC.ARTS.BONSAI doesn't have any photos, it's actually the least of the worries. Usage has been increasing, and it's primarily photographs. A single photograph of about 70K consumes as much resources as approximately 50 pages of text. If you have several pictures on a page, it adds up. The current system bandwidth allows for about half a million photographs of that size being sent, but even so it isn't quite enough for a month's demand.

Regards,

Matt
