Great Show

Yup... it was one of the best displayed shows I ever seen.

The photos were great!

Backdrop Construction...

Greetings!
Here is a few diagrams of how the backdrops were constructed. I used poplar wood, which is readily available. It is basically an economically priced hardwood. It comes planed with nice sharp corners, which is what you want. I glued and nailed the boards together. I pre-drilled the nail holes so as not to split the wood. I then set the nails and filled them with wood dough. After a light sanding, they were finished with a couple of coats of Polyshades finish (stain and polyurethane coating in one). The toggle bolts clamp to the underside of the table, securing the bottom piece. The sides are then inserted into the bottom, then the top installed down over the side pieces. It is all friction fit together! After assembled, just pull down the shade! They take about 3 minutes to put up, provided you lollygag a bit! They came out quite nice! Feel free to use this design to make a great backdrop for yourself, or for your bonsai club. Thanks to Mike P. for sharing his original design which I made a couple modifications to! Enjoy, Larry

P.S. Matt, if you want to move or copy this post to smewhere else, feel free. If you need higher res pictures, let me know.

These display backdrops ran about $140 each.

Great drawings, Larry! I hope your good work will inspire other clubs to upgrade their displays. Could you give us an approximate cost per complete unit? If other clubs are interested in building their own, it would give them a budget figure to work with. Thanks

Mike

Thanks Mike...I spent 25 years as a Technical Illustrator, so they seemed pretty simple to me. I think most carpenters could build them from these drawings. Your simplistic design makes them so nice!

I know that Larry's fine drawings will soon disappear from the scene. With that in mind, I copied them into Photoshop, resized them to print on letter size paper, and then stored them on my aux. hard drive that is dedicated to bonsai images.
I'd be happy to attach them to email and send to any and all that are interested. If you are interested, PM me with your email and I'll send them.

Mike

Mike, I am not sure what you mean. The drawings will be around for the foreseeable future. If you mean they might get buried - that's why I suggested we present them as an article

But they aren't going to disappear.

Regards,

Matt

Matt, I shouldn't have said they will "disappear". They'll just be out of sight after awhile, and therefore out of mind.

Regards

Mike
