Midori Bonsai Club exhibit

Yesterday I went to the Midori Bonsai Club show in San Jose. They have new backdrops built by one of the members. Added a lot to the show.
Please pardon the picture quality. I didn't bring any auxillary flash, and the on camera flash doesn't quite hack it.

Great stuff, Mike. Those backdrops really help a lot, especially when augmented with a nice scroll. I'm impressed. There are few really nice trees in that set, too.

Best wishes,
Carl

Hi Mike,

Really nice displays. I agree with Carl, the backdrops add a lot. Do you happen to have a side view of the set up that shows how the backdrops were put together and supported?

Howard, I don't have any pictures that would explain how they are assembled, but since I was involved in the design,I'll try to explain it.
First there are 2 tables back to back with about a 1/2 inch gap between them. The base is set on center of the gap, and there are large toggle bolts that go through the base, span the 2 tables and clamp the base tightly to them. The 2 side rails fit tightly into slots in the base, and the header that holds the pull down window shade fits tightly onto the side rails. Then the shade is pulled down to make the backdrop.
I have the prototype that I built several years ago that this design is based on. Improvements in the design were made by the Midori member that built them, and they work very well.
If anyone has a serious interest in how they work, I may be able to provide pictures of the prototype.

Mike

Thanks for posting this Mike! - I was down with the flu on Saturday and didn't get to attend, myself. For some reason I had the idea that it was a 2 day show or I probably would have dragged myself down there and infected you all, anyway.

Regards,

Matt

Backdrops...

Hey thanks Mike!

Mike shared his design with me on these backdrops and I made a slight alteration. They came out pretty nice and go up in a snap! If it's alright with Mike I could make up a diagram on these and post it here. They're fairly easy to build.

Larry, that would be great if you make a diagram and post it here. Anything we do to improve the art of display is a good thing.

Hi Larry!

Actually Larry if you want to do a whole article that would be even better! Particularly if it shows some assembly details.

You can start it anywhere and I can post it over to Articles when you're done.

Regards,

Matt
