Kathy Shaner on TV

Hey, I just saw Kathy Shaner on KCAT (comcast community channel 15) on a program called The Painting Gourmet broadcast Monday, January 30, 2006 at 7:00 PM (It's the community access channel) in Los Gatos. Rebroadcast is supposed to be Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at 7PM, plus she's going to be back next week!

HERE ARE SOME SIMULCAST NOTES!

There's a lot going on with bonsai in Europe, where it's much more open with better quality trees. Open as a trading partner with Japan. They can bring trees in pots, in soil. In the US you can't bring. Italy, Germany, France, Spain, England.

Many good trees developing in the US

GSBF Collection-North

Started in 1990, there's a garden, open Year round, closed, Xmas, thanksgiving, New Years, closed Monday & Tuesday. 11-3 Sat & Sun. 100 trees for display, donated items from bonsai masters, people, individuals that passed away.

She brought in some photos of
  • California juniper,
  • hackberry started 9 years ago in a 7 gallon container, airlayered off, cut the top out.
  • Shimpaku juniper cutting started in 1945
  • Chinese Quince 18 inches tall.
  • Kiusianum azalea
Demonstration was done on Callicarpa japonica (Beauty Berry) Leaves are starting to turn. Was donated by a Northern Californian. In a simple, plain brown hexagonal pot. Kathy redirected branches with annealed copper wire.

Pointed out the importance of a very sharp knife in letting things heal well.

The broomstyle hackberry for instance, had many large wounds on the trunk that have healed over as a result of scraping out the wounds.

Exercise the branches before bending them to enable more movement in the limb.

Bending down and twisting in the branch with pliers, bending in multiple directions, can go back in a few weeks and bend some more. No time limit in getting trees done!

Kathy said she was able to work on some trees in Japan for as long as a week at a time.

She brought in a Diamyo oak with beautiful color - the leaves were hand sized, and she said that the leaf size is not as big an issue as people would believe.

SHE WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK!
