You need to save these pictures at a much lower JPEG quality. You are saving them at print quality, so they are huge files and tiny pictures. What photo editing program are you using?

Thank you Mattfor the help. I am using the Adobe PHOTO DELUXE program I got free when I bought my scanner a few years ago. I find it much easier to use than Adobe Photo Shop since I am not too experienced with computers.
What I do is to choose " photo size" for reducing the very large size of my pictures (width by height) and then click the reduce button and also the JPEG format so that it the picture does not exeed 72K. So the only choice I seem to have is for the width by height which also gives the corresponding pixels as can be seen for the figures I wrote for each of the four pictures I uploaded. Should I just increase the width x height to obtain this lower JPRG quality ? Thanks again for the help. I probably won't able to try again before tuesday. |

If you actually have photoshop, it will be easier to manipulate picture size. The size of an image file is directly related to its size (in pixels) and image quality. In the case of JPEG's, the easiest thing to do is open the image in photoshop and go to the "Image" menu and select "Image Size..."
A box will open up where you can adjust the size of the image. Adjust your image until it is the desired size, again in pixels. The resolution box at the bottom only applies when printing the image, so don't even worry about that. When displayed on a monitor, only pixel area matters. Finally, when you save the image as a JPEG, you will be given the image quality option. There is a slider bar that adjusts the amount of compression in the saved file. On the left hand side the image will be saved with high compression, small file size, but low quality. On the right hand side, you have low compression, large file size, and high quality. The high quality images are mainly used for large-scale printed graphics. For your purpose, you can save your JPEG around quality "5" and no one will be able to tell the difference. For reference, I have included two images that are roughly the same file size. The small image was saved at quality "10" with a final file size of 70 Kb. The large image was saved at quality "5" with a final file size of 65 Kb. As you can see, the lower quality image is a smaller file, but the image itself is 65% larger than the high quality image. Hope this helps. |

Thanks, Frogboy for that excellent explanation. Terms like size, resolution and quality can be very confusing to new users.

Thank you, Frogboy for the detailed explanation you give me when using Photoshop and the confirmation given by Matt.
Unfortunately, I don't have Photoshop anymore because I found it too difficult to use compared to Photo Deluxe. Maybe one day I will download it again and make a serious effort to learn how to use it. Since I am one of those dummies Treebeard mentioned in another post, I will try tomorrow to download a copy of Irfanview and see If I can get better results with that method. Do you think the results would be about the same as the photos you sent me for demonstration? |

The results should be the same. I have never used Photo Deluxe, but most imaging software has options for custom-sizing an image and changing the quality of the final file. Check the help file in your program and see what you can find.
Also, I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you can do this with Microsoft Photo Editor (which comes with either Windows XP or Office (?)) |

if you want to make files smaller, all you have to do is put them into MS paint and save as a new jpg file. This cuts the file size dramatically, i had some at 90kb which were easily reduced to only 20kb. Then you could make the pictures much bigger.

Thanks again, Frogboy, you are right. As I looked back in my Photo Deluxe program, I did find the option for custom-sizing and changing the quality of the final file of a photo. Actually, it's the same as the one you described for photo shop since these two programs were built by the same Adobe company. Photo Deluxe is really an easy program for with lots of options for pictures and it also has all the tools needed to make virtuals which should be very helpfull for me in the future.
So, as you explained : I sized my pictures (about 9 cm x 7cm) and just before saving in JEPG, I opened the option for adjusting the amount of compression and saved my photos at the "5" level as you suggested. Thanks also, Alasdair, for your suggestion for using MS Paint. Here are the results: 1- Automne - size 13,55 cm x 17,89 cm = 384 x 510 file size 66K 2- Automne-2 idem 70K 3- Thuya bonsai idem 73K 4- Araucaria Tanuki size 14,53 cm x 19,4cm = 412 x 550 71K |
