THIS DISCUSSION WAS CUT OFF THE TIPS THREAD since it has little to do with tips - ADMIN

being a bad speller myself i have to argue the ladder of your to tricks of the trade. do misspelled words really ofend you that much? As long as the mesage is still understoode by people reading it, the spelling shouldn't matter. And if you can't understand what i'm saying, just ask and i will replay so i can shed some light on the problem.

If you are going to write and say that it is disprectful and shows you don't care...well why shold i show you respect? You sarcaustically throw that hint into the tricks of the trade.

PS this isn't meant directly for you. I just don't understand why people get so bent out of shape on message boards at bad spelling. When they most likely have had typos in their life.

Internet Explorer users might be interested in visiting http://www.iespell.com/

They provide a free IE plugin that can check the spelling in web forms for you without having to cut/paste into word.

Firefox users can install RiteOfTongue, which does the same thing.

Regards,

Chris.

On the internet the words you type and the pictures you post are the only things you are judged on. We can control both.

I would certainly agree with this line of thought on most message boards that I have been a part of, mainly due to the fact that most posts and threads get pruned or deleted on a regular basis...This forum however is not like that...This forum to my way of thinking is more like a growing book concerning bonsai...Sure it requires more time from the administrator to back-up, move, and generally maintain a site like this, but we have the luxury to go back and re-read threads and posts from many months, even years ago...It is also more costly to maintain such a large data base with all the threads and photos we have available here at BonsaiTalk, which is why there is a method set up by which we can make contributions to the expense...

It is quite obvious from many of the posts on the forum that others do not feel the same way I do about this, thus we have to wade through many posts that are; useless ["I like it", "I agree", "ditto", "nice"], hard to read due to spelling and grammatical mistakes, information that is wrong or not based on experience, and posts that are obviously only posted to increase ones post count...

I don't use the copy and paste into word on every post, but certainly a majority of them...There is also some small programs available FREE, that will check your spelling through your browser, if you care enough about what you are posting, to use them and find the copy/paste method too cumbersome or too time consuming...If what you have to say, and take the time to write is important enough to spend your time on, isn't it also important enough to give the readers your best?...Perhaps some think it is "cool" to ignore these errors...This seems to be the case on many message boards, but I really hope that is not the situation with those that do it here...I suspect it is more a situation of laziness, lack of respect for other members, or a 'who cares' attitude...

I know this post is not going to make a difference in the way many post or, their attitude on this forum...I do hope there are those that feel the same way I do about the importance of what we post here...We should remember that this post may be read by several hundred people over the next few years, and should be written with that in mind...

My apologies for such a long rant, but occasionally I think it is needed...

Regards
Behr

This post checked for spelling and grammatical errors in 'Microsoft Word'...

I'm totally with Behr on the spelling issue. When we post to communicate to others, we show respect by at least trying to make ourselves clear and understood. To each his own, and I recognize that many people are indifferent to spelling and grammar. However, please consider that we are giving you a "voice" when we read your post. We "hear" you talking, and our subliminal impression of you is built almost entirely on your public posts. Most people can't help it, they aren't being judgemental, it is simply a way that humans perceive their world. Everyone makes mistakes. However, the moment that it takes to read over your post and check for spelling and grammar is really not a big deal, yet it can have very positive results. Why should we have to question you, when your post is unclear? Why shouldn't we just shrug and move on?

My daughter is on a forum for Lord of the Rings fans, who are on the whole a very literate group. If someone posts poorly on that forum, the other forum members will either ignore or chide them for it. They are self-policing, which I find interesting because otherwise they are a very tolerant group. My son, who is a poor speller and writer, is on a forum for RC cars. He has repeatedly told people that if they can't spell or write with better clarity, he won't answer their questions or help them. He takes the time to at least try, and expects others to do so as well.

There is of course lattitude for people to whom our language isn't native, they will make mistakes....as we would in their language! But they seem to try harder than some who have been speaking and writing English all their lives! You can tell who is trying and who is not.

Our world is so different now, and our forms of communication are evolving to meet new needs. Someday we will be able to speak directly to each other and this will no longer be an issue, but until then....I applaud people who make the effort!
