Poll: What Trees Should a Student Start With

I'll try my hand at a poll.

Imagine that you are a bonsai master and you have decided to assign your student seven trees to start with using untrained stock. You also consider material that is readily available to the student.

You want the student to gain horticultural knowledge as well as aesthetic understanding of the species used. You know that your student has very limited resources that do not include a greenhouse.

They must learn the differences in seasons for deciduous stock, and for evergreen material. Tropicals are not to be included in this assignment.

Which species of the following would you choose for the student to learn with? Why? What would you want your student to learn from some of the trees chosen?

What tree might you assign them besides those listed?

That's a lot of questions for just testing how to create a poll

Gee, I didn't think about it, but you're right! If it hadn't been for the smiley, I might have gotten my feelings hurt!

This thread surely has a lot of smileys.

Out of the list you gave in your poll I only see two that would fit the bill for a beginner. Chinese Juniper and some kind of elm.

heyEarthy; You forgot to mention whether your budget was $1000 or $5000 (these are the only two choices allowed on this forum)? Anxiously awaiting answer, heyMikey!!
