As you can see the sides just curved up to and rounded over to make the top.
I would like to make an applied top like this. Pay no attention to the cheap look of this stand. It's the applied top that I like. What do you think?

Al - I think that you're right: an applied top would look very nice. I like the general design of the legs on the original. But heck, I trust your design sense for stands way better than I trust my own. So whatever you think would be good, would be great.
