This is my current experiment, and I am not recomending it at this time, until I know the long term result with my own bonsai. For full sized trees, aborists have generally been moving away from sealants, and going with dressings. Most organic stores sell wound dressings, and I am using one made by the local organic nursery here (Green Sense Tree Goop) (www.beorganic.com)(www.greensense.net).
It is a pastey powder that you mix with water. It is water soluble and has to be reapplied. It consists of diatomaceous earth, molasses, and manure.

Hey guys!

Thanks for bringing all this out in the light. I was about to order some cut paste but couldn't tell the difference between the different brands. Now I will hang back and see how you guys do before jumping in.

alright, i have been using grafting wax and will tell of results when i see them also. The way my trigs grow, i will be reposting two or three years from now.

I like the idea of the dressings that you posted Ralph. Makes me want to go out and hug a tree and beat up a lawyer. When you say reapply, what kind of time frame are you talking about?

even a scientifically or technacally exaustive answer would do.
Although plain english would be better, Just something.
An understanding of chineese language would help also I guess.

I've never used any cut paste's on my trees, mainly because I am slack but also because this is another example of man thinking he is smarter than nature. The way I see it, trees have been growing quite nicely for millions and millions of years, dropping limbs here and there and healing them selves up quite nicely. Then along comes man and says to the tree,no way your gonna heal up properly unless I smear all this goo all over you.I think the tree is going to decide how it's going to heal up no matter what you put on it.This is just my view on this subject I'm no expert. As my wife says "you think you know everything but you don't".

Treenut,
The wife is always right!
Growing condition for trees in bonsai pot are quit different from their growing condition in nature, and usually they are not in their natural environment.

Another thought.. In nature we do not care if there is a wound that heals poorly. In Bonsai we want to wound to heal an be invisible.

TREENUT:

The way I see it, trees have been growing quite nicely for millions and millions of years, dropping limbs here and there and healing them selves up quite nicely.
RIP:
Trees in the field that are growing at there strongest will heal quite nicely with just vasoline to keep the wood from drying out.
Trees in growing containers need more help to heal. A tree in a bonsai container will probably never heal with out some kind of treatment or sealing past.

TREENUT:
I think the tree is going to decide how it's going to heal up no matter what you put on it.
RIP:
The pictures that I have posted speak for themselves, I have also given the number of years that that each example represents. Cut past can be a pain but with out it the cuts on your potted tree will likely never heal. Use the wrong past and it can get ugly also. I do not have all of the answers yet but I am still looking and sharing.
Matt: Now would be a good time for you to give us some Idea of which products are best for which trees.

With the dressing, it is water soluable. Under daily water conditions and rain, I have to reapply about every other week.
One thing to note for those of you using nothing, a broken or removed branch is a wound. Wounds do invite disease and pests. Here in Texas, they have a problem with a fungus called oak wilt. One of the many transmission methods is a via a borer beatle that carries the fungal spores.
Check this url for a despcription of oak wilt transmission:

I use synthetic modeling clay mixed with a little olive oil.
The colors look funny but it does not dry out and keeps criters and such out of the wound. Have been using it on maples for a few years now. It works for me.
