Thinking Ahead To Winter

just running my winter plan for my trees by you to see if it will work. i am making a cold frame and instead of digging a hole i am just going to put my trees in one of our window wells for our basement (the window well is outside) and put the cold frame over it. i am in zone 5 wisconsin and it gets to about -10 F (sometimes colder a lot of times a little warmer). the window well is south facing. it is 3/4 shade and because our basement is heated hopefully it will kind of heat the cold frame up a bit. if it gets too warm i can open the cover of the cold frame. if it is too cold i can cover the trees in cedar shavings and if that is still too cold i can put a heat mat in instead of the cedar shavings which would make the air 10 F warmer. i can also use both if it is still too cold.
i have an amur maple (i know that will definitely make it) it is hardy to zone 2 or 3
i also have a japanese maple atropurpureum which is hardy to zone 5 (which is mine) but it will have been just airlayered and i am worried about the young roots.
will this work? do i need to do something more (i can't think of anything else)?
thanks

It might work. It might probably work, but you would need to put a min/max thermometer in there and actually measure the temperatures. They're inexpensive, so you might want a second one outside, exposed to the environment. Then you will know if you need some supplemental heat. No one (except maybe your next door neighbor, if he has bonsai in his windows) could possibly know.

Good luck!

Regards,

Matt
