I have a couple questions about purchasing seedlings online and what to do afterwards.
I was going to purchase from evergreengardenworks.com, so if anyone has bought from them before, can u tell me if their reliable, and have good stock, etc.. Secondly, what would be the best time to purchase a seedling and have if shipped to me(in kansas city). I will get a decidous tree, probably a hornbeam, beech, birch, oak, or trident maple(havent decided yet) and im thinking of growin it in medium size. Lastly, when i get it home what should i do? I will most likely put it in a grow box just before spring. My question is what kind of soil should it grow in while in the grow box? Regular bonsai soil? Anybody have any better ideas? Thanks, Kevin Last edited by kvnharv29 : 31-Aug-2003 at 12:07 AM. |

A few people here have purchased from Evergreen - here's one post that shows a few trees and how they arrived. Not all nurseries can ship year round.
http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...=&threadid=2359 Hornbeam Birch Beech and trident can all take similar soil, which could be reused bonsai soil in a growing box. In general, the deeper the container is, the less critical the soil is. Oak will need perfect drainage so you'd need to sift out the fines. Regards, Matt

Ok, thanks, you think i should add a little more grit to oak soil to get that better drainage?
And what do you think is the best time to order and have them shipped, in winter while dormant?

I think you should sift the oak soil and discard anything that will pass through a window screen. Oaks won't tolerate poor drainage. The amount of crushed rock in the soil will affect its consistency and the frequency you'll need to water. But adding grit isn't necessarily going to improve your drainage. If you had a coarse mix and added fine grit, that would not improve drainage, for example.
For the soil, it really comes down to the size of the soil particles and how much water they hold, but the depth of the container makes a bigger difference than even that. I can't really tell you if you need more or less because that comes down to how frequently you want/need to water your plants. It may call for some experimentation by mixing up some soil batches and seeing how fast they drain and how long they hold water (no bonsai required for this test!) Plants usually do quite well in growing boxes with good drainage. Compared with bonsai pots, boxes promote good root growth, so I don't think you will have any problems if you provide a lot of drainage area. If you intend to bare root the trees for transplanting, you would want them dormant. I am sure the Gardenworks people can make some specific suggestions for you. Regards, Matt
