Scars
Hey Guys'
I seem to be doing a terrible job with preventing scars on my Ficus neriifolia (salicifolia). Enclosed are a couple pics of some of the scars. I typically use a knob cutter and make sure the wound is concave but I don't typically treat the wound with any was or paste. Any way to redress the problem now? Thanks. ![]() |

Re: Scars
I learned this with ficus, unlike with most bonsai you dont want a concave cut. Instead leave about 1/4 of the branch to dieback then remove it.
Hope this helps!, Jeff |

Re: Scars
Hi J&J
Jeff's suggestion for leaving a stub is a good one for plants like wisteria, ficus and bougainvillea. You can leave a stub perhaps equal in length to the diameter of the branch, or a bit less. After the stub dries out and dies back a bit, make a second, flush cut, with a pair of concave pruners. Now go back and clean up the wound with a grafting knife. I keep an inexpensive folding grafting knife handy for just this purpose. There is some more info with photos in the www.TreeBay.com website in the Articles section under wound care. Just click on the main page on the picture of the wound. In general, for young fast-growing trees, we make concave cuts. For thin-barked trees (azalea - ginkgo) we often make flush cuts, and for vine-like trees (wisteria - ficus - bougie) we make stub cuts.
