Root Grafting
I have a shohin silver maple(actually its not quite a shohin yet, its got a few more years of training to be bonsai) that really needs some more surface roots, all the roots are on one side so I wanted to try my first attempt at grafting some roots on the other side.
I realize this probably isnt the right time to perform this procedure but I thought I'd learn now. I got the basic idea, you drill a hole through the base of the trunk were you want the root(this is like thread grafting), then you plant a healthy seedling or cuttings' roots in the pot and put the seedling/cutting through the hole, seal it with wound sealant, and bury the new root. Right? I need some better details and maybe some pics of this process if its possible, and some good tips. What and where exactly do you get the scion to use for the new root? Does it have to be from the actual tree? What time of year is this best done? Any other techniques to get surface roots?

Hi Kevin
I am still fairly new here and also with only 5 years in bonsai a relative newcomer. As all of us I have more experience in some aspects of Bonsai than in others so to get my postings up and not make myself look like a complete idiot, I post to the threads where I can add some value. Seems like yours were the right ones. Mike

I had a bad reverse taper above the nebari on this tree so I grafted a minor trunk on to it to fix the reverse taper and improve the nebari by cutting a channel in the main trunk, splitting the minor trunk and screwing the scion into the main trunk. I then bogged the wounds with the stuff in the yellow toothpaste tube. Brian |
