Red Maple turning green

My Red maple's leaves are turning green, it is about 14 inches long and the dealer said it was approximately 15 yrs old. Does anyone have any tips to take care of this tree?

Re: Red Maple turning green

There are red maples and there are red maples. Acer palmatum "Atropurpureum' has a distinct red leaf. In the dissectum cultivars, A. p. "Crimson Queen" holds good color. The leaves of many other maples cultivars appear in a rainbow of spring colors from green to pink. Some will be back to green by summer.

Many cultivars of maple don't hold true color until the plant becomes more mature. There is also an effect of sun on the leaves, too.

Also, many maples are grafted, and you will see the understock (Acer palmatum) green maple send up shoots sometimes as it is very vigorous. This is most obvious when you have a dissectum and see these lobed leaves appear in the foliage, or when it is a distinctly different color. The branches of the understack can and should be removed.

Don't worry, though. Green is good. Brown is bad.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Red Maple turning green

Even your average native maple [the ones I've seen] will bud out with red leaves then turn green as they harden off and receive more light.
