Question about maple care referring to a book

I didnt know where to start this thread. Matt can moved it if need is.

Anyhow, I was reading the "Totally Bonsai" book by Craig Coussins.
Especially the maple care section. In the : Main buds at the end of each branch sub-section, p. 86, it is said :

Quote:
To get smaller leaves, pluck out the center of the buds as they start to form
As my primary language is french, im perplex to what "pluck out" means.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Patrick

"Pluck out" means to remove by pulling or pinching.

Thats what I was thinking. Anything specific is meant when it says "pluck out the center of the buds" rather then "pluck out the buds" ?

Yes - I assume that he means that you want to take the middle-most forming leaves out of each cluster, leaving the outside ones.

Great. I understand now. The pinching/plucking is after the buds as grown a bit.

It's best to do it as soon as you can distinguish leaves. Sometimes that means forcing apart some of the developing leaves to get to the center. It's easy with a little practice. Here is the thread that the wiki entry came from:

Pinching Japanese Maple
