Ponderosa Pine

My Ponderosa is about 51 years old. Suddenly the tips started to turn brown. I checked the roots and are fine. We have had rain for the last few weeks on and off. I live in Tracy California. Any suggestions?

Re: Ponderosa Pine

When the NEW growth begins to turn yellow on a pine it tends to indicate a root problem. I would move the tree under shelter and give the soil dry just a little.

If there is no sign of root rot, at this point it is probably not prudent to do any soil treatment, because the treatment is pretty severe - drenching with a soil fungicide. It's nasty, toxic and smells really chemical-ly, plus it kills all the beneficial soil bacteria, myco, and anything that moves.

Pines tend to be the first to suffer the stress of overwatering. Always tilt the pots when it rains cats & dogs. I need to grab a jacket and go do mine!

Regards,

Matt

Re: Ponderosa Pine

Hi Alvaro,

Your pine might be affected by shoot tip moth attacks. Break off the tip of the shoot and see if it is hollow - and if so, there will likely be a grub in the hole (by now it may be pupated).

May or may not be the problem, but it sounds like it could be. They can destroy pines very quickly.

Good luck!

Kind regards,
