I saw a website once(I can no longer find it) that showed a step by step of develping black pines quickly by allowing wire to bite heavily into the trunk of young trees. Then removing the wire letting it grow out. From the pictures I saw, it seemed to work quite well.

There was a Bonsai Today article WAY BACK that had several of these techniques...

In addition to hammering and wrapping with wire...

Bending the trunk vigorously (probably not good for conifers- may seperate cambium because of the sap)

Poking series of holes with an ice pick

Slashing with a razor

And here is a really extreme fad... let the tree grow freely and feed copiously....

I never had any luck with this method. I killed a few trees doing it early on.

I agree with ripsgreentree on this. Plant it in the ground and nip the spring growth and the lower trunk will develop. It helps if you have a nice sacrifice branch down low that you can let grow too.

tree abuse

I wired one of my pine branches too hard and now it has a huge bulge right in the middle of the branch, very unsightly but proves that damaging your tree can result in thickening.
