Phoenix Graft

I was wanting to try a phoenix graft, but differently. I had a tree that died except the very bottom, and it sprouted a little thing a few weeks ago. I am wondering how I can graft it to the other parts of the tree. It has very nice ramification, and I did nothing to it. I found it in the wild like that and am wanting the illusion that the dead part is still alive, how would I do that?

Bonsai Today this month has a nice article on phoenix grafts.

There are no rules, you can do whatever you want. Keep in mind that these are not true grafts. You can wrap the living portion around the dead trunk; You can carve or use a router to make a channel in the deadwood and inlay the living branch, or attach it with screws or nails.

Following the existing pattern of growth will be helpful to create a convincing lifeline. With no photo and not knowing even the species of tree it would be difficult to make any specific suggestions.

Regards,

Matt
