This Is One For You Rene!
Rene, if you read this, I need your help. On the IBC forum they have been talking about a "blastbox". Tony Tickle mentioned it first, the someone said that Marc Noelanders was building one. I think it is used somehow for improving the look and artificialy inducing age to a shari. I would be thankful if you could ask around. Or snoop around whatever the case may be.
Thanks, Bonsai-al

If you're talking sandblasting, you might talk to Doug Philips at www.dugzbonsai.com. He and Larry White sandblast, etch and install glass for a living, and he showed me a sandblasted juniper maybe 3 years ago.
Regards, Matt

That may be what they are talking about. They seem to be trying to keep this a secret. I don't know what all the hoorah might be, but would be interested to know!.

I'm sure that's what Tony T. is talking about. He posted a series of pictures a few years back showing how he makes his shari look "more natural" using a sand blasting box. You can find one at large tool supply houses that cater to small business/contractor types. Around $300 and up.

Here ya go. http://www.aaproducts.com/SandBlasting.html
Thick rubber gloves are attached to the holes you see in the box so you can maneuver the work and the blasting wand without removing your fingernails in the process. |

I'm not Rene, but here's my 2p
![]() I've taken a peek at the link Tony provided, I've used one of these tanks before, at work. I used it to 'bead-blast' aliminium and steel... to privide a uniform, matt finish. I wouldn't dare use one on any of my bonsai! I would have thought that all the beads (20 microns, 0.0008", 0.020mm diameter) would get embedded in the wood, unless you used a really large grain, like 0.020" (0.5mm). The rest of the treee would need shielding too. Obviously they don't embed somehow, or people wouldn't do this sort of thing... Regards, TB

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME
|
Treebeard, interesting to hear from someone knowledgeable on sand blasting (I know, not bonsai). I have seen many pictures of trees that have been blasted and they do look real nice. The thought of the larger 'sand' particles is interesting. Wonder what size is used by the bonsai crowd!

Heh. Interesting how my weird various hobbies occasionally converge. Don't go out and spend $300 on a sandblaster, folks. All you need is a compressor, this link, and a quick trip to Home Depot:
http://www.thebugshop.org/bsfq_sand_tub.htm It ain't pretty, but it won't cost as much as a blasting cabinet, either, and it takes up a lot less room. Not real sure about what size of tree would fit in there, but you could probably get whatever size tub you want. Just a thought. |
