Need help with a Podocarpus

I recently a nice casacdaing Podocarpus. It is doing well and recently started growing nice and strong candles. I was not aware that's how they grow. Do I pinch them off or let them grow freely?

candles

Hi Jorge,

I'm not real sure whether the growth on podocarpus are actually candles as in pine candles. At any rate, whether to cut them off or leave them is based on what you want that particular shoot to do.If you want to strengthen the branch, let it grow and then prune later.Podocarpus are pretty good at backbudding. If you are looking to increase ramification behind the "candle" or trying to maintain the sillouette, clip it now.

I would leave the ones on the cascading part as they will serve to strengthen and thicken that part......that is a REAL generalisation ....if you are satisfied with the development of the cascading part, then treat them the same as the rest.At some point, though, you will probably have to give the cascading part some different treatment in order to keep it growing strongly.

Jorge:

Just want you to know, I'm not ignoring you, but have no answers. Having bought the podocarpus from the HeyMikey memorial benefit, I'm interested in learning more about them

So far, it's alive and survived a heavy root-pruning. New buds are appearing, and I didn't know they'd produce candles. I look forward to seing some.
