Mould

greetings.
Recently i had to go away for a couple of weeks so i was forced to leave my trees in the care of some freinds.
it seems they were a little to enthusiastic with the watering ,
im not sure what it was but my chinese elm had a nice grassy style ground cover with tiny yellow flowers, most of it has died and has now turned into this brown sludge growing mould like you see on rotton food.
my question is, should i repot this tree right now or leave it till the beginning of spring and try and scoop off the sludge untill then?
its going into the end of summer where i live but it's fairly temperate and winter is never really cold.
cheers.

Question

I think it's probably fungus of some kind.
And yeah why not repotting the tree if it doesn't get too cold down there !
Just listen to the tree !

OOOey goooey, Carp.

You would know best your micro-climate. If it is a Chinese Elm I would say repot, just knowing the strength of the species. On the other hand look at the growing condition maybe this tree is not tip top right now.

At the least I would do what the Japanese masters call a partial repot. They clean off all top soil and in between surface roots, including any living weed or planting. Using your chopstick cultivate the soil, then put back new fresh soil and water well.

This might see you through untill your next spring.
