Making Growing Beds

i have so many seedlings in pots and i really don't want to keep watering them. i want to put them in growing beds but the soil in my back yard is very clayish. i was wondering how i would go about curing at least a quarter of it to put growing beds ontop of them. i was think that i could dig out some of the bad soil put in ,fill the ditch with top soil, make a wooden border to elevate the surface, and then fill the rest in up to the top of the elevation. i am right or is there an easier/more effective way of doing it.
thank you

You are talking about creating a raised bed.

I created one along my back fence using landscaping timbers. I also had clay soil so I dug down 1 foot into the ground, removed the soil laid the timbers alond the inside edges and then stacked two more on top. I then filled this with a good mix of top soil with a good helping of mulch and pea gravel.

However, when it came time for my second bed I simply laid out my timbers ontop and then tilled in woodchips, schultz soil conditioner, a couple big bags of peat moss and a little gypsum.

I much perfer the second method. I still toss my used bonsai soil onto my beds and retill by hand any areas that I clear.

ps

gypsum is only effective for a short period of time and needs reapplication.
