Lime Sulphur Spray

I've heard that a dilute Lime Sulphur solution makes a good winter wash!

Can anyone give me any advice / aternatives for killing off overwintering bugs and algae from my trees?

Re: Lime Sulphur Spray

Hi John,

You can use a lime sulphur spray on deciduous trees. *Some people also use a Volck oil or other dormant spray before the trees leaf out. * The oil works by suffocating the insects. *Mix according to the directions on the package. *You can find dormant spray and lime sulfur at orchard supply. *The lime sulfur was sold under the name Orthene at one time (an Ortho product).

BTW, It's probably moss or liverwort you have on the trunks of your trees, not algae. *It's usually a sign of overwatering. *Pluck away any offending matter on the surface of the soil with a pair of tweezers or scrape it away with the dull knife. *Be careful not to damage the bark of the tree. *

Watch your watering and allow the soil to dry out a bit more between watering. *If you have long, uninterrupted periods of rain, tilt the pots for better drainage or move them out of the rain.

Regards,

Matt
