japanese maple shrinkage
i have a couple of unshaped [u:f8d2066bb2]japanese maples[/u:f8d2066bb2], and it looks like the trunks are "losing weight," like they are not as "fat" or filled in as say a month or two ago. not that i calipered them or anything, but they just look kinda hungry. is this just normal going into fall/winter, or am i watching too many slimfast commercials?

Re: japanese maple shrinkage
Hi John,
A taller tree tends to look thinner. *Maybe your trees are just growing up and losing their stubby appearance? Another possibility is that there is a graft somewhere and the trunk is growing at a different rate above and below the graft, giving a necked down appearance? Trees continue to grow by putting on more wood as long as they are alive. *So I can't imagine that this appearance is anything more than a perception. [i:dbf053c853]bonsaiTRIVIA fact: *While alive, the density of the wood in different trees species, from balsa to oak, is surprisingly similar because a substantial proportion of that weight is made up of water held in the tissues. *When the wood is cut and dried, the actual density of wood fiber becomes the more significant factor.[/i:dbf053c853]

Re: japanese maple shrinkage
Gee, I wish I had this problem. I think as I get older my "trunk" tends to expand instead of shrink.

Re: japanese maple shrinkage
Yo John,
I have heard this a few times now from bonsai students. I think it may be due to the fact that we buy potensial bonsai, then we learn more(like the beauty of thick trunks) then we reappraise our trees and they don't look as good. Just a possibility. I do know some cactus expand and contract with water availability. I have seen the same thing happen to sago palm trunks. But I agree with M.C. that is unlikely a woody stemmed plant tree would change in the direction of smaller.
