You are gonna want to wait for spring before you do any propegating. I think layering would be easier on japanese maples.
Here's a link to check out. http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...highlight=maple

So - Layering is really the best way. Good I too wanted to take some cuttings off a Jap. red maple in my back yard to do a bonsai with - but we tried to layer it in the summer I think - and both attempts on the tree died horribly. So - perhaps I should be getting back out there this weekend or something.

Japanese Maple Cuttings

I've had mediocre luck with then, but they are possible.

SO far I've done mid summer hardwood cuttings with about a 50% sucess factor. I have had to make a special small greenhouse and keep it in the shade for it to work well. Too much sun will dry them out in the summer.

I'm going to try cuttings before the buds break this spring to see if I have more sucess. I hear that's a better way to do it.

Plant the cutting with the slice just below a pair of buds. That's where the roots will most likely spring.

Hi All
I have had good success with cuttings from Japanese Maples.

I take them in spring just before the buds break and use a miture of 3 scoops of grit, 3 scoops of peat and 1 scoop of vermiculite.
I sift out all the fines and grade them to 2-5mm.

I use ordinary plastic plant pots to give me plenty of depth.
I usually take cuttings of last years growth (just below a set of lef nodes), about 6 inches long. (I have found that rooting hormone does not make much of a difference in the success rate.)
In the pot hey go, about half of the cutting in the damp (not wet) soil. I found that firming the soil helps the plant to set root quicker.

I make a frame with bits of wire over the cuttings and cover the whole thing, including the pot in bubble wrap. I keep them under a bench in the greenhouse where its warm but not in full sun and they usually show the first root after about 4 - 6 weeks. I keep the cuttings undisturbed for the full growing season to make sure they establish OK.

Success rate is about 75% (all free and no damage to the parent tree).

Regards

Mike
