It would help if you told us where u live, what type of tree, ect.. If I were you I would add a little bit of soil tothe bottom of the pot to hold it over till repotting season.

Re: I'm Scared....

A tree should be repotted before the soil stops draining well. The appearance of root tips on the exterior of the soil ball isn't necessarily bad so long as the drainage remains good and the water penetrates. When the water no longer passes freely through the container it becomes very difficult to water properly, and portions of the rootball can dry out or remain too wet for extended periods.

If, when you water the tree with a watering can, the water can still move easily into the container and out the drainage holes, you are fine for now and should probably wait until you have a bit more experience with the plant before undertaking a repotting.

Most plants are best repotted when they are just about to come out of dormancy. That's early spring for most temperate species. Many tropical bonsai can be repotted year round.

Regards,

Matt
