How to make trunk thick?
I have collected some trees in the nature. They are about 2 years old. They have many branches and nice foliage but the trunk is a bit thin.
Is there any special technique to make the trunk thicker? |

Re: How to make trunk thick?
The trunk, or any branch for that matter will thicken in proportion to the foliage load. The top will grow only as much as the roots can support. Since you have nice branching, planting in the ground is not a good option because you would lose a lot of the fine detail to the rampant growth you can expect.
You could consider potting in a large container, or selecting some low branches as "sacrifice" branching that will be allowed to grow to increase the girth of the trunk, then be cut off later. It might be helpful to know what kind of material you've collected. There is some general information on development in the bonsaiTALK Links under Techniques-> evelopingRegards, Matt

Re: How to make trunk thick?
They are in oversized pots.
My trees are Fagus sylvatica and Carpinus betulus. |

Re: How to make trunk thick?
In my experience, both the beech and hornbeam are slow-growing, but worth the effort.
The hornbeam has a lot of natural twigging that gives it a wonderful shape over time. The beech is a species that I am just becoming more familiar with myself. It seems to be in no hurry as a tree. It is the last tree to leaf out, and it holds onto its dead leaves in winter. Patience is the key with both these plants. Regards, Matt
