how to get a more dense foliage?

hi
I have couple of ficus trees in training. When summer comes a lot of growth adds to each tree, but also a lot of leaves from the lower parts of the branches turn yellow and then die.
I know that its a normal process, because the tree can only manage a certain number of leaves so, some have to go and it usually the lower part ones.

But my question is how can I get more dense foliage on my trees, can I use the pinching method, of is there another one
please let me know
thanx

Re: how to get a more dense foliage?

Hi there mansour,

Yes pinching promotes density. Any kind of light pruning on the terminal shoots of the branches and reducing the top of the tree will help trigger growth of interior and lower branches.

If the apex gets too dense, it will block light to the inner and lower branches, so usually some combination of thinning at the apex and pinching back the terminals is needed to keep the tree healthy.

If your lower and interior branches lack leaves, you may want to increase the fertility level in the soil and also make sure that the tree is getting enough light and ventilation. My ficuses (ficii?) spend the spring through fall outdoors under a little bit of protection.

Regards,

Matt
