Question Holly chop and trunk carving help

I picked this holly up at a nursery. I can be a bit impulsive. I liked the curvy trunk with the split in the front middle. I can't figure out if 2 trunks grew together, or if the tree is healing a deep gash or something. Never mind that it has no taper or branches...
THere is a good nebari that is still under wraps in this pic. I'd like to thicken up one side root a little though.
I think I would like to carve out the trunk at the line, hollow it out some and lime sulphur it.
Also, since it has no real branches low down, I'd like to do a trunk chop and start fresh. Three branches jut out the top of the trunk. I guess I'd cut below them somewhere.
So, I need to do 4 things. Trunk chop, carve, thicken one root, repot into training pot. What should I do first and when? I think I have the techniques figured out, except the root thing. Seems there is still some debate on how to thicken roots - expose to air and sun, or keep them under the soil. Hmmm.
Thanks.

I'll be interested in any replies you get. I picked up an American holly myself early this year. At the time it looked promising, but once I got to work on it I realized that it wasn't nearly as good a specimen as I had thought. (It's healthy, just not terribly interesting). So I'm thinking of doing a chop and regrowing it. But never having worked with hollies before, I'm a bit uncertain about it.
