Holding Soil

Dear Dr Bonsai,

I have always had trouble holding the top soil of a bonsai pot firmly in its place. What happens usually is that when I water the bonsai over a period of time, the convex mound of soil washes away. I am told that moss is a way out but geting fresh moss for my 50 odd (pre)bonsai's is a next to impossible proposition. Please advise. Thanx & Bye.

Re: Welcome

Hello Ravikiran,

The soil line should be slightly below the edge of the pot at its rim. *You will also want to use a gentler spray of water for watering your trees. *There are hose-end sprayers that are designed to do a very gentle spray and using one of those, or a water can with a similar design would be helpful.

You can find more about some of the watering options by visiting TreeBay Bonsai Tools & Supplies and clicking on Articles->Watering

Another possibility is that the texture of your soil is too fine, or too light. * If it contains a lot of fine particles, the drainage will not be good and it will tend to float out of the pots.

Regards,

Matt
