Heres a couple links here for you. The first link has a box that is deeper than what I use. The second link has a photo of a box that is more along the proportions I use, perhaps a bit too shallow.

Kevin,
I just got done making a whole stack of them in various sizes. They look pretty much like Matt's in the second link above. For shohin trees, 12" sides: Sides: Four 12" lenghts of 5/4" x 4" cedar Bottom: Three 12" lengths of 1" x 4" cedar. For regular size trees, 16" sides: Sides: Four 16" length of 5/4" x 4" cedar Bottom: Four 16" lengths of 1" x 4" cedar For extra large material, 24" sides: Sides: Four 24" lengths of 2" x 4" cedar Bottom: Five 24" lengths of 1" x 4" cedar. The sides are attached to one another using screws through small two or three-hold metal corner brackets. The bottom slats are nailed on using 5/4" nails. Screen (bonsai screen or, cheaper, 7 square / inch plastic screening from Michaels' hobby store) is attached in strips with a staple gun. Best regards, Carl

Kevin, I have been using both wooden ones that I constructed from 6" boards and plastic ones made by drilling holes in the bottoms of wash basins or storage boxes of 10 to 18 quarts in size. I have found the plastic wash basin boxes less expensive, easier to stack and more convenient to move around with trees in them because of their lips. I'm not sure how long either the plastic or wooden boxes will last; both have been in service for a year and seem fine. The plastic ones don't rot but I've heard they will fall apart eventually because of the effect of ultra-violet rays.
All in all, I prefer the plastic wash basin based boxes at this point. I like the way the wooden ones look, but I'm pretty much making all my new ones from plastic wash basins. Fred |

Yes I did, Matt, and it looked like a fine idea. I've been drilling my holes with a regular 3/4" wood working drill bit and find that it works just fine.
