Grafting Japanese Maple

hey, i was wanting to know if you could possibly graft japanese maple to just a regular maple, any kind or just other japanese maples

My guess is that you can graft it to any Acer species... or possibly just Acer Palmatum...

If you are grafting Japanese Maples you must use Acer Palmatum(Japanese Maple) root stock. I usually try to find root stock that's about the thickness of a pencil and of course a nice healthy root system is certainly very important in your success.

If you would humor me - what is the advantage of grafting over layering? I mean with layering you get the maple growing from a pure JP maple source - so wouldn't that be preferred?


I loved the link provided - it was great! Just got me to wondering why you would do it as pictured, having 2 main branches coming off the root and being 2 types of tree. Could be a interesting affect, and I'm fairly tired right now, so I'm probably missing the 'cut off the old branch later' aspect or something, but I thought I would inquire.
