Grafting To A Dead Piece Of Wood

Is there a link or does anyone have advice on how I grow a tree ONTO a piece of dead wood? Do I have to use the same species of wood? Has anyone ever grown it over a rock? as in...have the tree grow around a rock? or anything else?

If you do a search on "phoenix graft" you should be able to get ample information.

has anyone ever grafted something like a flowering shrub to a juniper before? A tree to another tree? Does it work if you can?

There is a whole portion of a chapter on Junipers in Colin Lewis' book where he does a case study on phoenix grafting. The title of the book is The Art of Bonsai Design and I think I bought it from Stone Lantern. I have read the book twice and it is a very good one that I highly recommend for newbies and seasoned bonsai artists alike. Good Luck! Hope this info is helpful?! I haven't done this technique myself but it does sound interesting for an advanced project. . .

Right now I'm growing an apple and a pear tree from seed right next to each other, hoping they'll fuse as they grow. I know this can happen with two of the same species in nature. Fingers crossed, it'll work for me.
