Avoid lining them up in a straight row. For me the appealing forest will maintain somewhat of a triangular shape in the tree line. That is, the thickest, tallest "dominant" tree toward the center of the group, the others dropping in height toward the left and right. Nothing like a perfect triangle, mind you, but generally like one.

I'd suggest looking at examples for inspiration, like these:

Here's one article Mike, I'm sure you can find others as well.
Good luck,

One thing I learned from doing my first forest and then having it evaluated was that I didn't place my trees close enough together. There usually should open space at the front, leading up to the forest, and I ended up with mine so spread out that there wasn't much open space there.

One thing that might help tracing the shape of the pot onto a piece of paper (a big piece of paper if it's a big pot) and then drawing circles to indicate where the trees trunks will go, big circles for big trunks, not so big circles for not so big trunks. Use a pencil and have an eraser standing by. ;-) With 23 trees there are a lot of possibilities, and you'll probably find it challenging to get it just right. I only had 9 trees for my first try and that was kind of rough.

Mostly, though, just try to enjoy the process. It's a lot of fun, even if sometimes a bit aggravating when you realize that your perfect vision ends up looking like an "X" marking the spot of some buried treasure in the forest...

Good advice here; If I may elaborate. When talking about the triangle. Looking from overhead (the top down into) the forest, ANY 3 trees should be able to make a triangle. The farthest 3 trees away from each other, to the closest 3 trees or any 3 trees in your forest.

Good luck,
redhawk

The source I'd use is John Naka's Bonsai Techniques I & II. He discusses the placement of trees in forest plantings.
