I wonder if I left too many branches at the apex?
Time will tell. I also mated some other smaller branches with
some grafting tape in hopes that they too will fuse over time.

I tried this "experiment" a little while ago, but the stock was not healthy at the time (which I knew but stupidly went ahead anyway). So, while I haven't had success with this technique on that size, I've spent a LOT of time thinking about it.

I don't think any of those big branches will end up in the final design. I was planning to forcing back budding until I got new shoots EXACTLY where I wanted them. Having lot of green on the tree at this point will help them contunue to fuze though, no?

Does the trunk still look like small trunks stuck together or more like on big trunk? Once the trunks are very firmly stuck together then prune back at the old branches to give your self some more little branches to pick from.

As for the branches fuzing, they should but it will take a long time and you won't be able to do any styling on them.

so would you think that those apex stumps should be shortened and or removed entirely?
The final design I have in mind is banyan but i will still need some sort
of apex. I'm peplexed but with figs time usually sorts out the tree.

And yes, the trunk looks like alot of branches stuck together but I like it.
It looks like those pics of giant banyans in the tropics.

There isn't really any rush in cutting those stumps out of there. You still just growing/fusing the stock. If they don't have any leaves on them they will die and dry-up. Then you can cut them back right to where they have fused.

Agreed. I would leave the stumps for now and let it grow. Yeah let time and nature do it's thing for now.

I'm doing a similar experiment but with a lot less trees.
But it seems to be working out great.

Take care.

Steez, just curious to find out if you have any more recent progress pics? I would love to see them if you do.

I've posted this in another thread, but thought you might be interested if you hadn't seen it.

Cheers,
Steve

here's my little ficus experiment... and i do mean little. these were 10-15 cutting from one of my bigger trees. they're just twist tied together, might split a couple off for first branch soon. trying to twist them a bit as i go too for some extra movement.
