I could use photoshop and draw where the main branches go if that would help things out. Because of the dense foliage in some places it can be hard to see where the branches are.

I would remove the branches where the red marks are.

And let it grow out from there, This will give yu trunk taper to start with.

Good luck, .Hec

Thank you for your suggestion, Hec

Everyone has suggested to remove the lowest branch and it definately needs to be removed. But keeping it on for now would fatten up the trunk more than if I would cut it off, right? I've been playing around with the idea of keeping it on a little while longer because of this. Or does it make a significant difference?

when removing large branches that will leave large scars be sure to leave a branch above and below to help it roll over. If you only have one (above or below) it will only heal on one side. Craig Coussins pointed this out to me, and i went back and looked at my collection and noticed the healing was happing like this.

So if you removed the bottom branch, be aware that the bottom side of the cut may not heal very fast.

Virtual

here is another quick, down and dirty styling. if you look i have taken it back to more than half, using the nice curves low in the trunk. I think making it into a small shohin, you will make the proportions better, trunk vrs height. oh, and i ended up using the first photo you supplied. (it was taken more from trunk level instead of pointing down on it... little easier to see that way.)
