Sawing Elm Thread Graft Tips?

Here in winter in the rockies, I find myself cotemplating where to take my trees once spring comes....May seems so far away.

I have a collected Siberian Elm. It was largerly ruined by hail this past summer. Now it consists of about 5 inches of 1" thick trunk and a bow shaped branch that is stuck out the top. The way I see it there is no way to salvage the largest branch. Come spring I plan to chop it off. I have 3 small shoots that emerge near the base of the trunk. I planed on thread-grafting these near the top to try and create a fresh start for this tree.

Does anyone have and thread grafting tips?

Cord

Cordon:

I am no elm-grafting master, but my experience with Siberian Elm is that they will bud back like mad after a chop, so the graft may not be needed if it pops out whre you want it.

You might try chopping the bow-branch off leaving a stub, in the spring, and see what comes out.

Thanks poots,

The stub of the branch is an a perfect 90 degree angle to the trunk. I don't see what good could come out of it.

my orginal plan for the eventual style of the tree was a live-oak style. Something like you can find in Naka's Techniques II. The hail storm stripped all the branches save the strongest. But maybe a simple trunk chop is the best option.... oh well I have a few months to study it.
