Sounds to me the tree is fine. I find on spruce tree that after a trim/cut they take a long time for new shoots to reappear. There is a technique to the right time to pinch them to get the shoots smaller and more of them. If you are really worried then scratch the bark a little and see if it is green underneath. If so tree is still alive. But I think you have nothing to really worry about.

i pulled back a bit of bark on the trunk and it's still green so thats good news. i also was looking at it this morning and were i've pinched it, it has a lavender purpley colour at the ends were the sap would come out? does anyone know what this could be.is it mutating or something?should i run for the hills or is it normal?

Thanks Buzz.

You've got me stuck on that one. Not sure. Maybe buds forming or just the sap. But really not sure.
