whidn,
I was thinking about that the other day because I needed some and the Bonsai store sells tiny bags for $2.50 (the same price of 20 Lb. bag of landscape rocks at Home Depot.) Last spring I bought a bag of these landscape rocks that were crushed, but can only find the large ones now. So they do sell them small, but you may have to wait until spring unless you can find it online. The only other thing to think about (if you were to buy the landscape rocks and do it yourself) is that you probably have to cook them in the oven or boil them. The ones I bought from the bonsai store were clean and sifted (free of any powder)

Happy smashing,

Why would I have to boil or cook them them?

I crushed up a 20 ib bag over the last few days. I made me a crusher with 2 peices of pipe. one slids into the other and I hit it with a hammer. But thats alot of beating and alot of dust.

Thanks though I will have to contact Home depot and see.
were the ones you baught small enough to use?

Whidn,
I'm not sure about the cooking/boiling thing, but doesn't bonsai mix need to be sanitized. I thought I read that somewhere, or maybe I read that some products were.

The lava rocks are for the drainage layer at the bottom of the pot, right? If thats the case, the ones I bought at Home Depot were small enough. (well most of them were).

Now that I really thought about it, they were not AS small as the ones purchased from the bonsai shop. hmmm... I think that I am going to stick with those, even though it costs more. I'm going to take a look online to see if I can find some. bbs

Actually I am crushing and sifting lava rock to mix with my soil for drainage and moisture retention.

HOME PROJECT
4 ice cream buckets
3 drill bits (3/8", 1/4", & 1/8")
a drill
a peice of window screen

Take 3 of the buckets and drill holes in the bottom (one bucket of each size bit)

Take the 4th bucket and cut the bottom out and attach the window screen to the bottom.

Now stack the buckets inside of eachother with biggest on top and screen on bottom.

Pour your crushed material into the top one and start shaking.

After your tired of shaking rinse with a hose and let dry

Now you have 4 different grades of lavarock, terracota, brick, etc.

Here is a site that everyone should read.

Any comments please?
