Can someone explain how this is done and why. I always heard about this method so how do you do it and why. I guess the best way to find out is to ask thanks

clip and grow, is where you take a tree, and cut it right above the first branch, than let tht branh grow, and clip, so that it creats a zig zag trunk, and ads a lot of taper

it depends on how thick the trunk i, you could do it w/ an older tree, but it would be hard, and if the trunk is to thick, it might look out of place w/ the new apex

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

CLIP AND GROW is the technique of shaping a tree by only clipping what you do not want and allowing the tree to grow in other areas. It is done to the whole tree, and will over time shape the tree in the manner you have chosen. By clipping you can determine direction of growth and ramification. Some trees are better suited to clip and grow than others. Clip and Grow is used instead of wire to shape your tree.

I don't think clip & grow is necessarily used instead of wiring. It's generally used prior to wiring. You can't use wire to achieve both taper and movement in your main trunks without doing trunk chops (clip & grow). You also can't use clip and grow to achieve perfect ramification, you'll eventually have branches crossing. I think both are needed together, each for the tasks they're suited to.

Ceberon, clip and grow IS used on some trees as the only form of training. I remember reading that Bonsaial1 uses it on his elms. It is very useful as a training method on types of trees that will snap as easily as look at you. On those, wire is not possible.
You do create ramification with clip and grow, and you can surely remove crossing branches. In addition, by clipping in the proper places you will determine the direction of the new growth! If I am correct the Chinese are more likely to use clip and grow than the Japanese. But on this last point I am not sure. Hopefully, someone with that knowledge will come forward.

Alright, I should have been a little less rigid with my wording. It is possible to just use clip and grow, but I was saying that it shouldn't be explained as an alternative to wiring, but in most cases, it's used along with wiring.

Not attempting to nit pick but... clip and grow can be used as an alternative to wire. Some individuals will not wire a tree ever!
Now if you are saying it is not a good option at times, I do not have the knowledge to respond. But it is possible to produce wonderful Bonsai with only clip and grow. Wire is great, but not the only answer... Bonsai was around way before wire became a tool. I would think Clip and Grow is more useful in deciduous trees more so than conifers but again my knowledge is weak in this area.

From my side, clip and grow is mainly used for olives, and like trees that have very brittle branches. Most trees like thos when you wire, the branches brake, and no more branch, with clip and grow, you can clip a few leaves or stems down, and the ones left will grow better. Not all trees respond to it well, and some will require wire, or even a combo of the two. Mainly it is just another way to form the tree, in a way that may cause less damage (wire being left on a tree too long can cause severe scars that may never go away, and some trees will just brake when bent, so wire is pointless).
