Re: Checking Soil Dryness With Moss?!

Well here is my two cents worth. Moss is a natural part of trees and nature. I have kept moss on my trees summer and winter for fifteen years and none have been dammaged because of it. Some trees have a little moss some have a full covering. Moss is an importiant part of my bonsai pallett as are pots stones driftwood and any other natural item of interest. Actually if it fits your vision of what bonsai should look like then by all means find a way to use it.

Re: Checking Soil Dryness With Moss?!

I to like the looks of moss but IMHO you can get into the mode of trying to keep the moss alive forgetting that you are keeping your tree(here a Juniper) to wet. I thought junipers like it on the dry side. I have never really seen moss growing around a juniper before especially around arid areas. I loved the look of moss and I had a tendency of keeping the soil to moist to keep the moss looking nice. Don't get me wrong I do use moss on my moisture loving trees and it doesn't seem to bother them. I also grow it in separate containers just for the look. I guess it is really up to the indvidual. Thats my 2 cents worth.
