If you were to drop one every other inch around the diameter you could get the job completely done in three seasons. By leaving every other inch open you don't interupt the vascular connection and you have healthy cambium on all sides of your grafts.

Steve

You asked if anyone has used the inarch method of grafting. I have many years ago, we used it to repair trunk damage on cherry trees that were hit by tractors and picking trailers. Probably can be used in Bonsai, unfortunately what I've experienced was a long trunk off a set of roots that came up the side of the tree and grafted in rather high on the trunk. somewhat unsightly. Figured out how to put pictures in my messages, but the pictures I want to upload are to big. Go figure!!!!!!

I am concidering collecting a siberian elm next year. It is where I could tend it a couple of times a week. I had been thinking of air layering it, as the lower meter of trunk is straight.
So could grafting roots onto it be faster than air layering? Would it save substancial time before nebari could form on an air layer?
It is where I could build a platform and put potting mix right up where the roots would be.

Air layering is certainly one way to produce roots. I've always been a little leery when it comes to cutting a ring around the trunk of a prise specimen hoping that it will root. Go for it if you have the expertise. Elm cuttings root well in my potting shed. I don't see why this wouldn't work. I'm currently reducing a very old japanese maple and have dropped in several seedlings last year. I'll be able to cut the top off now that six of the eight seedlings took. Read up on it and get as much info that you can!! Dropping in root grafts will take one seacon to heal. If you have a time element and need to get this done I suggest doing the air layer. But not cutting a ring completely around the trunk. Do a window box layering. Cut small square slots around the trunk where you want it to root, add root-tone and soil. Not the ring method we all hear about. Instead do the box cuts around the trunk so that the vascular channel remains intact. If I know elms you should get some sort of results with this method. Using the box method will not interfer with the trees growing cycle. What you are trying to do is fool the tree into rooting out of the box cuts you make. Questions or concerns drop me a line.

Good Luck
Doc
