bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

I'll just throw my .02 in here... I use terracotta bulb pans in much the same way Carl does. Here in zone 6 I still haven't had any break over the winters. Last winter just as a test I even left 3 empty ones out on the deck to collect snow, rain, sleet and freeze and thaw. Not one of even those broke this past winter. For pre-bonsai, I just drill a couple extra holes in them for drainage and that's it. At just over a few bucks each they are a great, inexpensive alternative for the growth period between grow box/bed and bonsai pot.

After thinking this though I have decided that pond baskets are still the best way for me to go for the following reasons:
  • They are even less expensive than Terra Cotta
  • Unlike Terra Cotta they help dramatically with root development
  • They also come in various sizes
  • They also are not unattractive
  • winter breakage is not a concern
