Air Layer Gone Wrong

Hi,

I started this chinese elm air-layer back in May. I followed the normal proceedure, cut the strip of bark, scrape off green, tie wire under the top cut, wrap in moss, keep moist.

I have been inspecting regularly for the new roots, but nothing. Today I opened it up to have a look, this is what I saw.

The cut has been bridged almost completely by new callus growth, with just a few areas of bare wood.

what did I do wrong? My guess would be not wide enough cut, and not rigorous enough cambium scraping....

The red line shows where the cuts were made

Regards,

TB

The most common mistakes are

1. Not going deeply enough. You need to scrape off more than the "green," cutting down all the way to bare wood - which looks like wood (not white or pulpy) but wood-like.

2. Bridging too thin an area. The area of bark removed should be about equal to the width of the trunk at that point.

It will probably layer much easier with all that callus tissue now, though.

Regards,

Matt

Ain't it amazing how fast that scar tissue grows when you don't want it to. If it had been a wound you where trying to heal it would have taken 3 years.

No, it was this one:

The method was the same though, apart from the final covering. On the one that hasn't worked, I use clear plastic over the moss, then a layer of black plastic to cover the clear.

TB

I have about three layers that I have been watering religiously since mid april, none of them show roots in the bag but the foliage is still alive.

Last I checked them, they hadn't bridged but were growing a thick layer of root mass, not root fibre. No clue why they're doing that instead of branching out. Guess I should check them again.
