By Kirk Gwazdac on Monday, May 1, 2000 - 03:54 pm:

Could anyone please tell me where i could find some bonsai tools and at a reasonable price?

Re: Bonsai Tools

Hi Kirk,

Please check out the TreeBay Bonsai Tool website at
www.treebay.com

You can also do a web search on Yahoo! for "Bonsai Tools"

There are a few points any enthusiast should be aware of in purchasing bonsai tools, regardless of their source:

1. Do you know the difference between "black metal" and laminated steel? Lamination is a process in which the metal is folded over many times and worked under heat and pressure. This process forms a flexible core and hardened edge that is durable and extremely sharp. Lamination and heat treatment are two qualities of superior tools that have been practiced for centuries since the time the legendary Japanese swords were first forged.

2. Consider the difference between "silvery metal" and stainless steel. Silver finishes are applied using a electroplating or chemical plating process to coat a tool with a corrosion resistant finish (typically nickel alloy.) While plated tools are pretty in the box, in actual use are prone to flaking and discoloration, just like the bumpers on cars from the 60's and 70's.

3) How about the difference between stainless steel and "laminated stainless steel?"

4) What kind of warranty (if any) comes with your order? How long does it last and what are the terms? What do you do if you are dissatisfied with a tool, for any reason?

Not everyone needs, wants or can afford the finest tools, but certainly everyone deserves to get the full value of what they spend. Much depends on one's budget, experience level and how much they demand from their equipment. This is why I encourage anyone interested in buying tools to learn as much as she or he can.
