STAGE 2

Here we are in august and about five months have gone by since the original cut.

Here's how the wound looks now, and you can see a nice callus has developed around the perimeter of the cut

Here are some of the tools we'll be using

From left to right

1. A sharp knife. Any knife will work for this purpose. This happens to be an old grafting knife. Don't use your best knife for working wounds!

2. A nylon bristle brush

3. wound sealant

Peel off all the old wound sealant. If you are using a paste designed for bonsai use, this step is easy.

If you're using white glue, latex caulk, play-dough, silly putty or gorilla snot, you probably already know my opinion.

Now trace the perimeter of the wound with the sharp knife.

This step of reopening the wound will trigger the tree to try to heal itself again. The old adage "Don't reopen old wounds" simply doesn't apply in the bonsai world.

HINT: before making any cuts on maples, crabapples and other trees that are particularly susceptible to viral infection, it's a good idea to disinfect your tool first with a solution of 15% bleach-in-water, particularly if you're working with maples and moving from wound to wound. They are prone to verticillium wilt in my area so I am extra careful!

After going all the way round, clean up the wound area with the nylon bristle brush to remove all the loose material. If you have any decay it's a good idea to carve it out.

An old toothbrush makes a good substitute.

Next apply FRESH wound sealant. Press down firmly and work it into all the corners. We're just starting here.

This treatment of another wound shows how to properly seal all the edges. If you don't you'll get thrips and all sorts of nasty pests moving into that dark, moist environment, so don't leave any voids and completely cover all the areas that were cut.

We'll revisit this wound in the spring and see how it's coming along.
